San Simeon, California: Hearst Castle

We were on our way to my mother-in-law’s house in Pine Grove, California for the holiday. Christmas time is about the only time my husband gets some time off, so that’s usually when we travel. #holidaytravel #plannow

John and I decided to stop in San Simeon and go to Hearst Castle since I had never been. We stopped at a wonderful hotel, The Cavalier Resort. Clean place, affordable, and nice overall.

Yes, you can actually play chess, or checkers. Whatever suits your fancy!

We spent the night and then ventured out to Hearst Castle for a day of “touristy stuff”. Since I had never been I was a little excited, I must say. Just love hearing about how the wealthy lived and played! I find it very interesting.

So, for those of you who have never been, there is a lot of walking. There are a few different types of tours you can take and we took two tours this day—the Grand Rooms tour and the Upstairs Suites tour. A whole lot of stairs! Great exercise for the day. Had no problem getting my steps in that day! I’ve got to tell you, I grew up in Southern California and I am guilty of being a Californian that had never been to Hearst Castle. Can’t say that I know why either. Well, I’m glad I went! So much history in one location. I think it was fabulous that the Hearst family wanted to preserve it.

John and I spent the day touring through the castle and marveling at the views! Great place for a day trip. It worked out well. We went to the castle then had time to finish the drive up to Pine Grove. Sometimes you just need a little change of scenery. No first class accommodations, no high thread count, just some every day rest, relaxation and tourism. Sometimes you just need to get away! #getaway

Okay, well we didn’t actually roast marshmallows but, you get the point.

Gorgeous pool. I wanted to jump in but I think they might frown on that a little.

The amount of time and energy that went into the Castle is astounding. I recently had my home catch on fire. Rebuilding after that was a feat. That took over a year and it was a whole lot smaller than Hearst Castle!

I especially loved the pool. There is something to be said for an awesome pool! Not to mention the view of the ocean from almost everywhere! If you get a chance, you should visit. The whole San Simeon area is simply gorgeous. #simplebeauty

We often get caught up in our desires for the tropical, the cultural, the tried and true “vacations” but the truth is, there is so much beauty right here in our beautiful country! I am looking forward to traveling the country and blogging about our findings. I am so excited about our new path. If there is a location you are interested in, or think I should know about, let me know and I will see if it’s on our list of places to see. Who knows, we may even be passing through your area of the world!
